Guide: Bridging To OP Mainnet

Bridge your staked ETH to Optimism

Updated this week

Lido's staked ETH is now accessible on Optimism! Stakers can deposit their staked ETH - in the form of stETH & wstETH - to OP Mainnet via Superbridge - a user interface over the native bridge contracts that is recommended by Optimism.

Depositing to Optimism

The bridging process is straightforward, allowing you to transfer your stETH/wstETH to OP Mainnet in just a few minutes. Here's how it works:

  1. Visit superbridge.app/optimism and connect your wallet.

  2. Choose the token you wish to bridge - stETH or wstETH.

  3. Choose the amount of wstETH to bridge.

  4. Approve the bridge contract to interact with your tokens. This will require a small gas fee to make the approval.

  5. Confirm the info and sign the Deposit transaction. You can check the transaction status in the Activity page.

Congrats! You now have staked ETH on Optimism. If you can’t see your tokens in your wallet, please refresh the list or add the stETH/wstETH token to the wallet.

Withdrawing from Optimism

A full withdrawal requires 3 steps in total (one on Optimism and two on Ethereum). You can track your withdrawal progress on the Activity page.

  1. Switch to the Withdraw tab on superbridge.app/optimism and connect your wallet. Make sure you switch to OP Mainnet.

  2. Initiate your withdrawal. Select the token token to withdraw - stETH or wstETH - in the token list and the amount, hit ‘Withdraw’ to confirm. ETH is required on Optimism to pay gas.

  3. Verify the withdrawal. After the withdrawal request is proposed to Ethereum (within 2 hours), complete the verification on the Activity page by clicking ‘Verify’ under your transaction.

  4. Complete the withdrawal. Wait the 7 day verification challenge period and then claim your asset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find answers to the most common questions.

What is stETH?

Lido's stETH is a transferable rebasing utility token representing a share of the total ETH staked through Lido. Your supply of stETH rebases daily as staking rewards come in.

What is wstETH?

wstETH (wrapped stETH) is a non-rebasing version of Lido's stETH where your balance remains constant and network rewards accrue in the form of increased wstETH price (unlike stETH, where your balance increases on a daily basis).

How do I get wstETH?

To get wstETH, you can wrap your stETH or ETH on stake.lido.fi/wrap.

Are there any bridging fees?

Network fees are required to pay for the gas costs on Ethereum and Optimism. There are no extra fees specifically for using SuperBridge.

How long does it take to bridge?

Depositing to Optimism typically takes a few minutes. Withdrawing to Ethereum takes approximately 7 days due to a security feature.

How do I withdraw to Ethereum?

As designed, bridging back to Ethereum requires 3 steps and takes about 7 days after the verification.

Can I cancel the action of withdrawing to Ethereum?

No, it is not possible to cancel it after you have submitted the bridging request.

Why does it take 7 days to withdraw?

The 7 day duration for the bridge is established as a security measure within the OP Stack and serves as a challenge period. You can find more information about the challenge period here.
